The New York Column: Personal observations from the city, among other things.
What does this city feel like after the novelty wears off?
For me, the answer to this question has come and gone.
My first year, I photographed everything.
Fire escapes. Brownstones. How the sunset fell on infamous monuments.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped reaching for my phone.
There is a certain beauty that comes from achieving a sense of mundanity where most days once felt like a spectacle.
The city remains the same, but I now see all that it entails from a different angle.
Isn’t that what all midwestern, small town girls are searching for when they make this move?
The Carrie Bradshaw fantasy that so many are chasing, to me, seems to require a familiarity with the city that is obtained when the dust settles.
…that dust has now settled.
Not because the magic wore off. That magic still exists in every avenue.
It’s just that somewhere along the way, I became acquainted with that magic, and the city became mine.
